Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced Adam Selipsky’s resignation from his position as Amazon Web Services (AWS) CEO in a heartfelt blog post detailing his tenure and the leadership change that will be effective on June 3.
Adam Selipsky joined Amazon in 2005 as the first Vice President, consistently leading AWS sales, Marketing, and Support for 11 years.
Later, he took a hiatus from Amazon to accept the CEO position at Tableau Software from 2016 to 2021.
However, when Andy became Amazon’s CEO on July 5, 2021, he wanted a leader who understood AWS and valued its culture.
This was when Andy approached Adam Selipsky as the best candidate.
In the same year, 2021, Adam became the CEO, agreeing to serve only for a few years. This eventually became true with his resignation announcement on May 14, 2024.
Adam Selipsky is a South African-born but grew up in Seattle
Adam Selipsky is 58 years old, born in 1966 in South Africa to father Herb Selipsky and mother, whose name remains unknown.
His grandparents landed in South Africa while fleeing from the antisemitism in Europe during the early 20th century.
Later, when Adam was a child, his parents shifted to the United States and settled down in Lake Forest Park, Seattle.
They all still live in the same area, and his father, Herb, a former periodontist, calls himself the oldest guy in Lake Forest who can water ski, which is also a passion of Adam, as per his Instagram bio.
Adam is also a passionate tennis player and a wine guy. His family owns a wine cellar, and both father-son duos are members of a wine-tasting group.
Meanwhile, CEO Adam Selipsky has also created his own family with his wife, Laura Selipsky, whom he married in 1993 at the age of 26.
The couple has two children: a daughter, Nina Selipsky, and a son, Drew Selipsky. Both of his children attended private Lakeside School, the same as their father.
Their schoolmates included the children of Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, and Rich Barton. Now, Nina is a student at Harvard Law School, and Drew studied at Georgetown University.
Adam is also an alum of Harvard University and Harvard Business School, where he received his MBA.
He started his career as a principal at Mercer Management Consulting from 1993 to 1999 and eventually ended with his recent resignation from the position of AWS CEO.
