Lin Yu-ting, a Taiwanese boxer, recently became involved in a gender controversy during the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. This controversy sparked discussion among the IBA and other Olympic officials regarding gender eligibility rules.
The 28 year old, Lin along with Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, have been the center of controversy where critics brought up their disqualification from the 2023 Women’s World Boxing Championship because of their gender identity.
According to the International Boxing Association, Lin and Imane failed unspecified gender eligibility tests. They proved they had XY chromosomes, which led Bulgaria’s Svetlana Staneva to win the bronze medal, which Lin Yu-ting first won.
Regardless, the International Olympic Committee and its Paris Boxing Unit criticized the disqualification as “Sudden and arbitrary” and taken “without any due process.” They also took a different eligibility test, which proved the boxers to be females.
After being eligible to play as a woman, Lin Yu-ting defeated Bulgaria’s Svetlana Kamenova Staneva by 5:0 in a women’s 57 kg quarterfinal, securing her place in the semifinals with the aim of at least winning the bronze medal.
However, Lin Yu-ting’s victory in the semifinals draws attention to her gender identity controversy, leading to the netizens’ various speculations about her identity. Some believe her to be a woman, while others think it’s not possible.
Likewise, this controversy has made people curious about Lin’s romantic life and whether she is married to a man, has a wife, or is dating someone. But despite the speculations, Lin Yu-ting doesn’t have a wife, and no information about her dating life is publicly available.
