Ever since the bodycam video that displays a 36-year-old black woman, Sonya Massey, losing her life to a fatal police firearm incident has been released, people are coming forward, speaking up for justice for her bereaved family.
Illinois authorities released the video footage on Monday with the consent of Sonya’s family 17 days after the tragic incident occurred. While netizens appear to be furious with the deputy for whatever he did, the country’s high-profile personalities show their support for Sonya Massey’s family.
On July 23, 2024, U.S. President Joe Biden shared a lengthy post on his Facebook, expressing his concern for Sonya’s case. He wrote, “Sonya Massey, a beloved mother, friend, daughter, and young Black woman, should be alive today…Sonya’s family deserves justice….“
Sonya Massey called 911 for protection, but instead was tragically shot by Illinois Sheriff's Deputy Sean Grayson. He not only took her life but also discouraged his partner from giving aid. We demand justice for Sonya and her family! #JusticeForSonya #SayHerName pic.twitter.com/5FZRWT1wyW

Biden further stated that he is feeling heartbroken thinking about what the entire family of Sonya Massey is enduring for the ‘senseless loss.’
Likewise, Illinois Senate member Doris Turner and Mayor Brandon Johnson have also advocated for Sonya’s justice, and attorney Ben Crump is fighting her case.
Sonya Massey’s father, James, said that he was unaware of the deputy’s involvement in his daughter’s passing until the news emerged on the Internet
In a recent press conference, Sonya Massey’s father, James Willburn, said that he initially had an impression that some unknown intruder k*lled his daughter. Just recently, he came to know that the Illinois Sheriff’s deputy’s involvement took his daughter’s life.
In this regard, he said, “I was under the impression that a Prowler had broke in and k*lled my baby never did they say that deputy involvement.. until my brother read it on the internet and he shared with me ..this is a deputy involved sh*oting..“

Sonya’s father also stated that in 2020, he underwent quadruple heart bypass surgery, which he survived at the time. Now, he believes that God made him alive to see his daughter losing her life at such a young age, for which he appears to have a deep regret.
Likewise, James expressed his anger at the country’s system and said that the country should pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act in her daughter’s honor.
Well, Sonya’s uncle, daughter, and other family members showed their presence in the press conference while her mother, Donna Massey, was mourning her loss at home.
