Starting out as a student leader, he eventually joined the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in 1975.

Moreover, two cars, the Maruti Zen 2000 Model and the Maruti Zen Estillo, were in his wife’s name. She also had jewelry worth $5954.83 (INR 5,00,000).
While there was no property in his name, property worth $23521.56 (INR 19,75,000) in his affidavit was shown in his wife’s name.
