Pop Culture Roundup 02

We are going to start serving up a weekly slice that highlights the latest tidbits in news and hype (and some cool asides) in the pop culture universe here at The Superslice. It was a good week filled with a lot of yummy stuff, so let us get right directly into it…

DC releases the much-anticipated first look at star Henry Cavill as Superman (click to enlarge). Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures have provided the first look at the new Man of Steel, revealing star Henry Cavill as Superman in the film from director Zack Snyder. Currently in production, Man of Steel is slated for release on June 14, 2013.

What’s with this trend of having scales on costumes? Is this Supes or Aquaman? I understand that there’s a need to update the look and that these superheroes are in live-action settings that operate in the “real world”, but it seems as if they’re all shopping at the same superhero fabric store. Easy on the embellishment is what I’m saying; there’s a need for a durable costume, but Superman’s eyeballs are bulletproof! Other than that, I like Cavill as Superman, and I appreciate that they’re already pushing this as a more action-packed movie.

Following suit, the makers of The Dark Knight Rises have released this image of Anne Hathaway as Catwoman (click to enlarge). In the pic it appears she has highjacked the Batpod and is clad in a pretty minimalist and utilitarian get-up. She’s also wearing some high tech goggles. Hmmm, we kind of wanted to see a realistic take on the costume with the cat ears. Word on the streets says that we will, but I cannot confirm that costume design.

And here’s a glimpse of Catwoman/stunt double in action, during the on-location filming in Pittsburgh (click to enlarge). This shot reveals a better perspective, a side shot that displays the rest of her costume, belt, boots and all. Are those Prada thigh-high boots she’s wearing?

We’ve previously seen Tom Hardy as Bane, but like the Catwoman set pic, here are some more recent shots from that Pittsburgh on-location set. Batman and Bane are brawling.

It appears it is actually Christian Bale and Tom Hardy, rather than stuntmen. I am really surprised at how unguarded the makers have been with this set piece. (images via MTV, check out out the rest of their collection. Really good stuff, great access by MTV.)

AMC has released the official trailer for The Walking Dead Season 2 that was recently screened at Comic-Con. The series is set to premiere on October 16, 201.

As expected, it looks riveting. With all due respect to The Atlantic, I’m a little worried that showrunner, Frank Darabont has fled from an already successful show like this. Damn you, Mad Men! (note: we are huge Mad Men fans, maybe it should be, Damn you and your mismangement, AMC!”)

Here is a tease of a teaser (?!). This is the encapsulated glimpse of The Avengers teaser that is shown at the end of the credits for Captain America: The First Avenger.

What a blockbuster of a comic book movie. The one-two punch of The Dark Knight Rises and this Avengers film (not to mention, a hopefully serviceable reboot of Spider-Man) is going to be huge in 2012, especially after a disappointing summer in 2011. Here are some caps below.

Robert Downery Jr as Tony Stark / Iron Man

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers / Captain America

Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner / Hulk

Chris Hemsworth as Thor

Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow

Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye

Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury

The Avengers

How about a good ole action movie? Here is Killer Elite, starring Jason StathamClive OwenRobert De Niro and Yvonne Strahovski and directed by newcomer, Gary McKendry. It will open in theaters on September 23.

A teaser trailer for the post-apocalyptic film, The Day, directed by Douglas AarniokoskiOpen war against humanity rages. 5 survivors; lost and on the run. The pursuit is relentless, the bullets are dwindling and the battle is everywhere. This is a 24 hour look into their lives. Fight or die. Starring Shannyn Sossamon and Dominic Monaghan.

Francis Ford Coppola returns with a small and strange, supernatural film titled TwixtA writer played by Val Kilmer, with a declining career arrives in a small town as part of his book tour and gets caught up in a murder mystery involving a young girl. In a dream, he is approached by a mysterious young ghost named V, played by Elle Fanning. He’s unsure of her connection to the murder in the town, but is grateful for the story being handed to him.

Here is a highly inappropriate and hilarious red band trailer for the Jonah Hill comedic vehicle, The Sitter. Hill plays a college student on suspension who is coaxed into babysitting the kids next door, though he is fully unprepared for the wild night ahead of him. Raunchy comedy ensues. This is directed by David Gordon Green, from Eastbound & Down and Pineapple Express fame.

Here are some newly released high resolution of images from The Amazing Spider-ManThat is Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker / Spider-Man and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy.

Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can’t Lose. There are more than rumblings that this Friday Night Lights movie is going to happen. Peter Berg is pushing for it and probably has the juice to get this thing greenlit. This is one of my favorite television series ever, I would say it is in my personal top three episodic series. It was a show with an amazing cast, lovely dialogue, characters you cared about, loved. Watching this show, I wished I knew these people. It was a show that had great production value and was beautifully shot. At times, it was utterly emotional and cathartic. It was realistic, genuine, yet also wonderfully earnest and optimistic.

With that said, and I think I’m in the minority here, I don’t want to see a Friday Night Lights film. Why? Why beat a dead horse? I suffered from postpartum depression when the series ended the first time around on DirecTV (before it re-aired on NBC and reopened old wounds). I was in the camp that was furious that this great show was not being continued, screamed effigies at the public-at-large for not responding to this great art. Then I came to terms, five seasons was enough. If you’re counting the misguided turns in the second season, maybe four seasons would have been enough. And with how the fifth and penultimate season perfectly ended; it was beautifully resolved in that pitch-perfect bittersweet tone…why spoil that with a movie? Are we in Philly now? How do we get back to Dillon, Texas? I just think it would just water down the legacy of that show. Don’t get me wrong, though, if they do in fact come out with that movie, I will indeed watch. I LOVE me some Mr. and Mrs. Coach (Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton). The Taylors are the best television family you could ever ask for. Can they be one of the best movie families? Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can’t…

For my fellow Game of Thrones junkies. This won’t hold you over until Spring 2012 (maybe A Dance with Dragons can), but it is fun. Here is a reveal of the visual effects created by BlueBolt for the first season of the wildly successful HBO series. Check out the cool computer-generated matte painting and layering that goes on that helps transports us to that time and place.

For my fellow Breaking Baddies…or Breakers (?). I came across this footage of Aaron Paul and Dean Norris auditioning for their respective Breaking Bad roles. Great casting, I say, tailor-made!

Also, there are talks that the series might end after two more seasons instead of just one more. Vince Gilligan, the series creator, idealized that the season would end next year in a fifth and final season. The negotiations have been touch-and-go, Sony Pictures, who owns the show, have recently putting out feelers to other networks outside of AMC.
