Kristel Candelario was sentenced to life in prison on March 18, 2024, for abandoning her 16-month-old daughter Jailyn Candelario for ten days, which caused the demise of Jailyn due to extreme dehydration.
On June 6, 2023, Kristel Candelario left Jailyn alone at their home in West Boulevard, Cleveland, with a few bottles of milk and vacationed in Puerto Rico with her ex-boyfriend for 10 days.
After she returned from her vacation on June 16, 2023, she found the body of her lifeless child in a playpen covered with urine and feces.
When asked by neighbors, they said that Candelario had a history of abandoning her child, and some also said that she had left Jailyn alone for two days in the home just before the trip.
After an interrogation, Candelario revealed that she had been suffering from postpartum depression for a long time and that the trip was a getaway from her depression and anxiety.

In a March 20, 2024, TikTok post, a person said that Kristel Candelario’s husband’s name is Henry Garcia, and he is from Ecuador. The TikTok user also said Henry shared how he met Candelario on social media.
It added that they were in a long-distance relationship in 2020 before tying the Knot, and the father expressed his grief for his late daughter. However, no information about Kristel Candelario’s husband is publicly available.
Kristel Candelario’s parents asked the court for mercy, blaming her actions on mental health issues
Before Kristel Candelario was put behind bars, her parents, Ketty Torres and Kleber Candelario, pleaded for mercy in court, stating that their daughter was battling with health struggles, including postpartum depression.
Likewise, Candelario’s mother, Ketty, also said to the court that her daughter came from a family where there were relations of humanism, and the important thing was the family.
Ketty also said that Candelario grew up in a healthy environment in Ecuador and chose the same profession as her father and grandfather. However, in her adult years, she suffered from several physical and emotional problems.
Candelario’s mother further stated that her depression, anxiety, and conversion of neurosis disorder ended up consuming her, and as a result, she suffered from fainting spells.
Ketty further concluded her statements by saying that no one ever imagined that her daughter’s mental health would culminate in a tragedy. She said, “I beg the court not to demonize her and point finger at her.”
