I precisely recall when the “mashup” started to really take off. I was at Amoeba Music, in the early aughts, digging through the bins for some vinyl and I came across this record with a nondescript cardboard sleeve. On the label was a Coop-esque devil chick, the platter was titled, Satanik Mashups Vol II. There was an outburst of a giggle, I muttered to myself, “I’m totally fucking getting this.” On the b-side was a track called Back in the Episode; a mix of Dre’s The Next Episode and AC/DC’s Back in Black. Peanut butter and jelly.

What was once deemed as simply “mixing”, blossomed into the saturated art-form known as the mashup. Bona fide DJs such as DJ AM (Rest in Peace), DJ Z-Trip and Danger Mouse (see The Grey Album) were the forefathers, while over-glamorized and glorified party DJs like Girl Talk carried the torch and capitalized on the never-dying trend. The mashup is a guilty pleasure and now a staple.

Sometimes a track goes beyond guilty pleasure status. Case in point, this latest mash of post-hardcore band, Fugazi‘s I’m So Tired and Wu-Tang Clan‘s seminal track, C.R.E.A.M. Feel on some Wugazi, it is sweet, sweet stuff. Download it before it disappears.

ABOUT:

Wugazi is a labor of love by Cecil Otter & Swiss Andy. A year’s worth of cutting up every imaginable Fugazi record and trying out every Wu-Tang acapella they could get their hands on, resulted in Wugazi: 13 Chambers (a must listen for anyone who even looked at a skateboard in the 90’s).

Cecil Otter is an emcee & producer, and one of the founding members of Doomtree. He has contributed to over a dozen records. His most recent full-length, Rebel Yellow, was re-released by Sage Francis for Strange Famous Records. He’s now recording his solo project, Porcelain Revolver.

Swiss Andy is a musician & producer residing in Minneapolis. He has been a contributor to several bands including The Millionth Word, Field Guide and The Swiss Army. He is currently working on a remix of Rebel Yellow.
