Dennis Farina (1944-2013) Dead at 69
Yes, London. You know, fish, chips, cup o’ tea, bad food, worse weather, Mary fucking Poppins. London! -Dennis Farina as Cousin Avi in Snatch
Sadly, proud Chicagoan, former police officer, and veteran character actor of film and television, Dennis Farina, has passed away. Farina died this morning at a hospital in Scottsdale, Arizona after suffering a pulmonary embolism (blood clot in his lung).
Farina was well known for his numerous roles as detectives, cops, criminals and mobsters. The Italian American actor was so convincing playing these heavies, he was consistently typecast in these kinds of roles. But Farina owned each part and always entertained his audience by incorporating his Chi-town moxie, delivering his lines with fiery zest (when it called for it) and turning on the humor when it was necessary. He was more than a proficient actor and we’d enjoy him in every film or television appearance. And those appearances were many, just look at his memorable body of work. The films include Thief, Manhunter, Midnight Run, Get Shorty, Out of Sight, Saving Private Ryan and Snatch. Then there were the many television shows: Miami Vice, Hardcastle and McCormick, Hunter, Remington Steele, China Beach, and Law & Order, to name a very few.
Dennis Farina was always a favorite when he graced the screen, big or small.
Somewhere out there, a three-volley salute can be heard for Detective Dennis Farina, as he was one of the good ones. We offer our condolences to his family, friends and fans.
