Pop Culture Roundup 48

Spring Breakers, please welcome the triumphant return of the Pop Culture Roundup, the forty-eighth edition. This one goes out to Jack Cates and Reggie Hammond.
We caught Spring Breakers with a crew on its opening night, Friday. I was expecting a subpar, forgettable film by Harmony Korine but after a few minutes, it confirms itself as entirely ironic. I wanted to be indifferent but it entertains and succeeds as an earnest satire. But the irony is not overt, that is, until the crown jewel scene at the end of the second act. There is an intentionally unintentionally-funny montage that is sidesplitting; I have never laughed so hard with an audience. Holy shit.
Selena Gomez delivers as the naive, corrupted bible-thumper. James Franco‘s wigger delivery and Riff Raff–inspired persona wavers from horrible to comically brilliant at times. The movie has a good running time and decently flows, which means it was well edited. It runs at about an hour-and-a-half. It’s also beautifully shot. Go figure.
It is a cocktail of the dumber versions of Scarface, Drive and Thelma & Louise. I can recommend this one and suggest you go see it in a theater with people.
