United State of Pop 2012: Shine Brighter (Mega Mashup) / DJ Earworm

Wedding DJs, I defy you to not play this song at your next nuptial reception. It is awful yet glorious. Just like life!
This remix and video mashup, United State of Pop 2012: Shine Brighter, consists of the 25 most popular songs, during 2012, in the United States as determined by the Billboard weekly Hot 100 charts. It’s four minutes of the usual suspects (Carly Rae Jepsen, PSY, Maroon 5, Fun, Bruno Mars, Flo Rida, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, et al), condensed, smashed and mixed into a single track.
It’s no wonder as to how seamless the mega mashup is as it’s a testament of how generic and derivative pop music can be. We’ve known this but this is what guides the modern hit single; the songs are all formulaic. At this juncture, we can engineer a pop charter like McDonald’s architects and synthesizes the Chicken McNugget in their food labs, “Ah, yes, Product 420.12 has the right consistency, texture and “mouth feel”. The combination of the perfectly crisp husk, tender mechanically separated chicken and added niacin, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid, dimethylpolysiloxane and Tert-Butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) is a savory and delicious cocktail.” In pop music, it’s all about the platitude about love/life/fun, incorporate one part exhilarating melody and mix in a serving of a catchy hook. And don’t forget the dubstep remix for that inevitable cash grab. I’m sure Nate Silver is working on an algorithm to predict pop hits as we speak.
We could go on about the lamestream but if we’re honest with ourselves, we dig the occasional McRib and/or McNugget. We’re erudite not elitist. And if we take it one step further in this confessional, we kinda dig this mega mashup. It makes us bop and it’s bubbly. Now, excuse me while I go punch a hole in this drywall so I feel like a man again. Seriously though, as dark as things have been, we could use a little more “bubbly” in our lives. But be forewarned, only partake in mindless fodder in moderation, as the Mickey Dee’s will rot your gut, toxify your liver and clog your arteries, bubble gum pop will darken your soul and make you dumb. It may be art but it is lazy art; which is bad. And, sometimes, bad art can be a drug.
I can’t wait to blast this track in my convertible Miata or my PT Cruiser.
