UPDATE: new lyric video below

This SoCal summer joint just dropped from young Kendrick Lamar. Hailing from Compton, Lamar is widely considered as one of the faces who will bring back hip hop from the doldrums of commercialized deadwood; he is a new hope. Aside from being able to legitimately flow, he doesn’t come with the predictable gangsta-rapper pretense that you would expect from a rapper emanating from the inner-city of Los Angeles. He brings a voice and a cadence that’s fresh.

The Recipe is the title of this track, the recipe being women, weed and weather the proverbial cocktail that draws people to the West Coast. This is the debut single coming off of his debut album for Aftermath Records. If Lamar is the Prince of Compton, then Dr. Dre is surely the King of Compton. The Doctor, the Aftermath impresario, is fittingly featured on the catchy track.

The beat was co-produced by (son of Mexican-American hip hop artist Kid FrostScoop DeVille and samples Twin Sister‘s smoky song Meet the Frownies. The catchy hook hauntingly loops, “Smoking weed with you, ‘Cause you’ve taught me to…”

Check out this audio interview with Scoop from Bootleg Kev about making the record. Scoop seems like a decent, ambitious and humble dude; we appreciate that he makes a point of giving propers to Twin Sister.

Also, be sure to check out the Twin Sister video of their live performance of Meet the Frownies at the Mondrian, shot by our friends at Tiger Tiger, at the end of this post.

We will definitely be blasting The Recipe in the whip, when summer hits, as we blaze past the palm trees.
