Mashup culture exploded in the mid 2000s, however, the genre was mostly limited to mixtapes and poorly edited YouTube videos. Video games were not included into the culture until 2010, when Exploding Rabbit amazed us with their release of Super Mario Crossover. The game can be characterized as a 8-bit wet dream. Iconic NES characters such as Link and Samus are now available in the world of Super Mario Bros. Super Mario Crossover 2.0 expands on the same concept with more characters from SNES and GameBoy. We haven’t played the game as of yet but the trailer looks impressive. It’s arousing to see the overlap of game textures (16 Bit over 8 Bit, black and white over color). Super Mario Crossover 2.0 is definitely one to look out for in 2012.
