MTV’s Oddities: The Maxx / Liquid Television
by Teemunny Published on Monday, October 31, 2011
Do you remember when MTV showed actual music videos and had decent original programming? Do you recall that span when the network wasn’t flooded with culturally draining reality tv shlock? Do you remember how radical, artful, original, and entertaining the early ’90s late night series, Liquid Television, was? It was an Emmy Award winning show.
Liquid Television showcased some fantastic shorts and animated shows such as Beavis and Butt-head, Æon Flux, Cartoon Sushi, and The Head. Paired with The Head, during the half hour of MTV’s Oddities, was one of my favorite shorts titled, The Maxx. This was based on the marvelous comic book series, of the same name, created by artist and writer, Sam Kieth. It was a comic book with gorgeous art which dealt with adult subject matter, that was surreal, somewhat dark and dreamlike.
Thankfully, MTV has made all of these episodes available online. Watch all thirteen The Maxx episodes HERE. They are great, you will dig them profoundly. Also be sure to check out the other great shows like Æon Flux HERE.
